Celebrating 40 years of pride, pageantry, musicianship, and service, the Association of the United States Army — Sounds of Freedom Military Concert Band continues to uphold the cherished tradition of the American concert band through dynamic and meaningful performances.
Originally known as the 509 Band, the ensemble traces its roots to 1986, when a small group of veterans gathered at American Legion Federal Post 509 in Fresno, California, to commemorate the end of World War II through music. Many of these founding members had performed in military bands during their service, carrying forward a deep tradition of musicianship and patriotism. The 509 Band quickly grew in both size and reputation, leading to a move to the Legion of Valor Museum and an official affiliation with the Association of the United States Army. With that transition came the name it proudly carries today: Sounds of Freedom Military Concert Band. Continued growth eventually brought the ensemble to its current home at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District.
As active-duty military bands were reduced during the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, the need for ceremonial music remained. The newly named Sounds of Freedom rose to meet that need, developing expertise in military protocols, memorizing bugle calls, and building a comprehensive ceremonial repertoire.
Today, the Sounds of Freedom proudly serves both military and civilian communities through a diverse performance schedule that includes military ceremonies, civic events, and public concerts, all presented with the highest level of musical integrity. The ensemble is comprised entirely of dedicated volunteer musicians from across California’s Central Valley, bringing together students, educators, veterans, public servants, and semi-professional performers. While some members have served in the armed forces and others have not, all share a unified commitment to excellence, service, and patriotism. Each individual contributes a unique story, shaping the band’s vibrant and distinctive identity.
The band regularly performs at military installations and official functions, having played for ambassadors, dignitaries, generals, admirals, heads of state, and service members of every rank and branch of the United States Armed Forces. In recognition of its impact, the band has received three Congressional Citations for outstanding service from the United States Congress. With every performance, the Sounds of Freedom Military Concert Band remains dedicated to honoring service, preserving tradition, and inspiring community through music.
